When you think about it, no other living creature
on earth, not even man, with the possible exception of
the Bubonic Plague carrying flea,is responsible for
more human death and suffering over the ages than the
mosquito. Not only do they transmit Malaria but a
whole host of other serious diseases including: Yellow
Fever, Dengue Fever, Dengue Hemorraghic Fever,
Japanese Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis,
Eastern/Western Equine Encephalitis, Rift Valley
Fever, West Nile Fever, Chikungunya, Filariasis
(Elephantitis) etc. All of these result in, or are
capable of, causing significant debilitating disease
and/or death around the world every year!
Is this natures way of human population control as
Bob alludes to? So where do we find the balance
between proper mosquito control and pesticide use to
protect human life, and also deal with preservation of
the world environment and its species? No easy answer
I know , but certainly food for thought next time we
are swatting that pesky mosquito after a good wind
session while contemplating global warming.
