Hilton School

Beginner to advanced

Hilton School sits adjacent to a small, grassy park overlooking the James River from the Newport News water front. This park offers a shallow launch with grassy rigging and parking nearby. The nearby fishing pier was destroyed by hurricane Isabel but the bearby waters seem to be clear of debris. Park in the school parking lot only when school is not in session, otherwise you can safely offload your gear there and park out along the street. The launch is fairly clean but booties are recommended due to possible debris.

The waters are pretty shallow with various sand bars creating some fun chop. Out in the shipping channel there can be some pretty good swell, especially when the wind is opposing the current. The closest iWindsurf sensor (MMMBT) is located on the south island of the Monitor-Merrimack Memorial bridge-tunnel.

Best wind directions are Southeast clockwise to Northwest.

Take I-64 to Mercury Boulevard West. Go to first traffic light and turn right onto Todd's Lane. Turn left at next light and continue on Todd's Lane for about 3 miles. Once in to Newport News it becomes Main Street. Continue across Warwick Boulevard and follow Main Street for about a half mile to the end. You will see Hilton School in front of you at the "T". Park and/or offload in the parking lot to the left.

Good points:

Shallow water near shore, nice paved parking lot and/or street-side parking nearby, shaded, grassy rigging area, minutes from food.

Bad Points:

Just limited parking and a small beach.
