First Landing State Park

Lat:3655'09.96" Long:7603'17.81"

Intermediate to advanced

Like Ocean View and East Beach, First Landing faces northward from the lower shore of the Chespapeake Bay. This launch is frequented by kiters but there is plenty of room here.

The bottom is sandy and clean as is the beach. There are two iWindsurf sensors located nearby. The closest (Lynnhaven) is located to the West on Lynnhaven fishing pier. The other (Cape Henry) is located on the roof of the observation tower on Cape Henry at Fort Story.

From I-64, take Northampton Blvd./U.S. 13 North (Exit 282). Go through eight lights, then turn right at the Shore Drive/U.S. 60 exit (last exit before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel). Take a right on Shore Drive and go four and a half miles to the park entrance. To reach the beach, Chesapeake Bay Center, park office, camping or cabins, turn left off U.S. Rt. 60 at the stoplight and check in at the contact station. For the Trail Center, picnic area and trails, turn right instead.

Good points:

Nice paved parking lots, clean sandy beaches, bathrooms and camping on-site.
